DEEP stands for Dunbar Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness.
DEEP is a citizen’s grass roots effort to ensure our community is able to take care of itself after a disaster. Experience has taught that after a disaster, it is our neighbours and community that will be the first to offer aid or to provide key logistical support. City and Provincial first responders will be busy taking care of high priority situations and may not reach individuals or communities for days or even weeks after disaster strikes.
Starting in 2013 as a collaboration of the Dunbar Resident Association and Village Vancouver Transition Society, with support from the City of Vancouver Emergency Social Services director, local concerned citizens have volunteered their time and skills to build a community based emergency response organization.
Our initial focus was to increase awareness and build on the Block Watch program and Map Your Neighbourhood (MYN) program to Dunbar neighbourhoods. To increase knowledge, we offer talks on relevant subjects like Local Earthquake Hazards, Rapid Damage Assessment of Buildings, Psychological Response to Disaster, Experiences from the Christchurch Earthquake, the Seattle Communication Support Hubs and others. To promote training and skills, DEEP has organized many practice exercises with general public attendance encouraged, including table top exercises and our most recent practice drill of the DEEP disaster support hub.
Our focus is on addressing community wide issues and building response resources including working with community partners, City emergency services and local schools and churches, to identify places of refuge, provide communication links, emergency medical support, food and security, until city and provincial services can be restored. We actively collaborate with other community groups to help them build capacity.
DEEP has recently been selected to participate in the 100 Resilient Cities program as one of four community groups (and the only community organized group) to receive support to raise awareness of the role emergency preparedness plays in resilience. DEEP gratefully acknowledges the financial support provided by the Dunbar Community Centre Association which has enabled us to outfit the Dunbar Disaster Support Hub.
